Devon Driver Training Centre provides exceptional driver training across a number of course, including Taxi Courses and Mini Bus Courses. All of our trainers have a wide range skills and experience to give you the best level of teaching. We make sure the training is relaxed and enjoyable.

Ian Kingdon

Founder and Instructor

Ian is a hugely experienced and knowledgable driver trainer and has been teaching for over 25 years. Formerly a battle tank driver in the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment and then having an extensive career in within the Transport Industry, Ian retrained as a driving instructor in 2001.

Steve Pounder

Instructor

Steve is an experienced driver trainer and examiner. He qualified as a police advanced trainer in 1985 and worked at the then Regional Police driving school in Devizes, Wiltshire, and subsequently at the Devon & Cornwall Police Driver Training School. He undertook a variety of roles including VIP protection and anti hijack; as well as all levels of police courses.
Steve retired from the Police in 2004 and qualified as an approved driving instructor with both learner and fleet DVSA accreditation.

Martin Smith

Instructor

Qualified as an ADI in 2002, RoSPA Gold Award continuously ever since (apart from a short glitch in 2007!). Helped to develop Speed Awareness courses for Lancashire County Council, then moved to Devon 2011 working with Devon Drivers and Red One on Taxi testing, Minibus testing, pre-licence training, disabled driving experiences and trailer towing training.

Claire Hancock

Instructor

Claire is an experienced driver trainer who qualified in 2006. She has a diploma in driving instruction and an award in education. Over the years she has specialised in anxious and special needs pupils. She trains learners and full licence holders as well as delivering speed awareness and driver improvement courses. Claire is also a member of RoSPA advanced drivers and an active member of the local group including tutoring new members.

James Palmer

Instructor

James has been in the driver training industry for over 15 years. From teaching learner drivers their first steps on the road to fleet training and workplace risk assessment. James also works with local authorities, delivering NDORS courses such as speed awareness courses. James also specialises in neurodiversity educational courses, driver training, and driving instructor training. Before his career in driver training, he was a long-distance HGV driver.

Paul Abrey

Instructor

Paul has been an ADI for for 5 years training both learners and full licence holders. An active member of the local RoSPA group, Paul is a RoSPA Gold advanced driver and RoSPA L3 Advanced driver coach. Paul also delivers training for NDORS courses and fleet.
Before becoming an ADI Paul taught music to all ages both privately and in secondary schools.

Lisa Dockree

Instructor

Lisa Dockree is a highly experienced Approved Driving Instructor with over 32 years in the driver training industry. Throughout her career, she has supported a wide range of learners — from first-time drivers to professional motorists and trainee driving instructors.
Lisa holds the Diamond Advanced Driving Instructor qualification, achieved after completing her Diploma in Driving Instruction and successfully passing the prestigious Cardington Special A driving test. She has also gained IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) and Diamond Advanced Driving certificates.
Before relocating to Devon in 2015, Lisa worked alongside the Hampshire County Council Road Safety Team, delivering professional driver training to council employees.
More recently, Lisa has undertaken a role delivering training for the Safe and Considerate driving courses and has also gained a qualification in Understanding Autism and Neurodiversity, expanding her expertise to better support clients with Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD, and related conditions. She now specialises in helping neurodiverse learners achieve their driving goals with confidence, patience, and understanding.

Jon Watton

Instructor

‘Private hire driver in Birmingham for several years before qualifying as a driving instructor in 2001. Trained driving instructors for a large national company. Moved to Cornwall in 2010, training learner drivers, driving instructors, fleet driver training, NDORS. Have also trained drivers with disabilities in adapted vehicles.

Geoff Moore
